The Accademia Gallery in Florence is a pendant to the Uffizi Gallery. Those who come to Florence for their first time just cannot miss this museum, as the original home of Michelangelo's David, the absolute symbol of art in the world. The statue was taken to the Gallery in 1873 to protect it from weather and in its place, on Piazza della Signoria, now stands a copy of the famous statue.
To experience the real thrill to see David up close the copy is not enough, you need to «feel» the energy that emanates from the true David!
The Academy is also home to the Prisoners, one of Pietas and St. Matthew of the great Michelangelo, a collection of plaster models of the neoclassical sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini, the collection of musical instruments of the Medici and Lorraine and the two largest collections of late Gothic and Giotto school in Florence, in addition to the painting collections of the Counter-reform.
