A day at the Vatican is a three/four and a half hours tour in The Vatican Museum, including the major works of art: the Gallery of Paintings, Raphael’s Rooms and the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo’s, Botticelli and many other top artists’ immortal frescoes.
The 15th century sees the beginning of the real power of the Popes that, little by little, became sort of Kings. Here, in the Vatican Palaces, they collected most of the master-pieces of art that were discovered in Rome and which they used to adorn their private apartments. Starting from the XXth c. some of these apartments were open to the public and became a museum.
The Vatican hosts some 7 main Museums, eg the Painting Gallery with masterpieces of Giotto, Leonardo, Melozzo da Forlì and Raphael; the Etruscan Museum with precious vases, statues, gold bracelets, and earrings; the ancient-Rome Museum with statues of Roman Gods and Emperors; the Sistine Chapel.
Later we’ll head to St. Peter’s Basilica
