Located on the Mediterranean coast in the north of Israel Akko is one of the world's most ancient cities has
Once a strategically important port, it seems that every nation or religious movement has tried to conquer Akko at one time or another. During the last 5,000 years, it has been ruled by the Canaanites — the Greeks — the Romans — the Byzantines — the Crusaders — the Mameluks (whatever happened to them!) — the Turks — the British… and, since 1948, it became part of the State of Israel. Even Napoleon brought his troops here in 1799 but was forced to retreat after a two-month siege on the city. Almost forgot, the most important: Hummus and falafel places all over the Old and new City, and these are probably your best bet for some quick, fun dining. The best-known hummus joint is Said, in the market of the Old City. At the marina there’s the famous Uri Buri fish restaurant and the Galileo Restaurant. Neither are cheap, but said to be very good.
