Easter Rising 3rd Battalion & Mount Street Battle

Eamon De Valera was the only Battalion commander during the 1916 Easter Rising not to be executed and he went onto to play a major part in the Irish Civil War, as Taoiseach(Prime Minister) and as President of Ireland. He commanded Boland's Mills on the southside of Dublin City in the now leafy suburbs of Dublin 4 close to the Aviva Stadium. The despatched outposts to hinder British Army reinforcements entering the city and one of these outposts on Northumberland Road inflicted the largest number of casualties on the British Army during the Rising. A British soldier in a letter home described Northumberland Road as being 'awash with British blood'. An exercise in futile waste of life and heroic courage. The walk begins at Ballsbridge where we take up the story of the 7th and 8th Batallions of the Sherwood Foresters from Nottingham nicknamed the 'Robin Hoods' and we follow to it to its final conclusion, the surrender and execution of the rebels. At times a harrowing tale but much of the story has remained untold until now.
