Spiti Safari

Overview

Spiti Trek is a popular safari trekking spot in Himchal surrounded by Kullu Valley, Ladakh and Tibet with twin valleys of Lahaul and Spiti. The Jeep Safari 'Spiti Safari' is arranged from Kullu valley, Manali to Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh.

Our journey starts from Delhi to Manali. In first phase, we will move to the village of Naggar, which is famous for the Russian artist Roerich’s gallery. After that to Langaza village, it also has a unique temple which is regarded as the headquarters of all the Gods and Goddesses of the region. On numerous occasions the Gods are invoked by the villagers to pass judgments on unresolved issues. After an hours’ trek we will move to Dhanakar. Dhanakar is a spectacular blue-green lake amidst pink-brown hills. If time permits we can visit the lake. While moving further, Giu is the most isolated village of Spiti, lying close to the border of Tibet (China). Giu village is also interesting as the body of an old priest is (a few hundred years old) sitting in meditation. The whole tour is like an ultimate adventure of lifetime.

Day 01:

Delhi to Manali (2050m) 10-11 hrs

Early in the morning after having breakfast, drive for Manali, which takes 12 hours.

Manali is a picturesque hill town at the head of the Kullu valley. Stay at night in hotel and have your dinner.

Day 02:

At Manali

On second day, we will visit Manali, a small hill station bustling with tourists. We start the day early with a drive on the left bank of the Naggar. It also has a famous castle and the views around the area are spectacular. We come back to Manali and drive to Solang, which is the paragliding and skiing zone of the area. Stay overnight in hotel and relish your dinner in hotel.

Day 03:

Manali to Kaza (3686m) 8-10 hrs

This day is an early start. We will drive over the Rohtang pass, which descends into the valley of the Chandra River and continue past Chhattru, Batal and over the Kunzum la, which divides Lahaul and Spiti. Here we can spend some time taking in the magnificent views of the Chandrabhaga range of mountains. The main attraction in this place is the Buddhist memorial. After this get into our waiting jeeps, to reach Kaza by evening, this will take 8 – 10 hrs. Stay in a hotel or in a guest house.

Day 04:

Kaza — Day S/S trip to Kye, Kibber and Tashigang

After having breakfast, we will travel to the highlands of the left bank plateau for altitude acclimatization and return to Kaza for overnight stay. Here, we would visit the Kye village after ½ an hour’s drive. The largest monastery in Spiti is Kye gompa. We will drive up to Kibber village (another ½ hour drive away), which is at 14,000 feet above sea level, and the road heads for the trade route into Ladakh over the Parang La. We will stop at the village of Gette and Tashigang (about 1 hour drive), high up in the mountains. It is the area where the famous Spiti horses are bred for trade with the nomadic changpas of Ladakh in exchange for the valuable Pashmina wool. If time permits, while going back, we could walk down a spectacular steep downhill trail to Kye gompa, where our jeeps will pick us up for the drive back to the hotel/guesthouse. We can roam in the evening in the markets of Kaza, where you will find interesting local handicrafts. Stay overnight there in a hotel or in a guest house.

Day 05:

Kaza to Komik (4513m)

Early in the morning have your light food and then a drive to Langza village, which will take 1.5 hours. It is located in a large high mountain field with a striking mountain, Chau Chau Kang Nilda. Here we will find evidence of the Tethys Sea. Sea fossils can be found during a short trek of 1or 2 hour run. From here we visit the ruins of an ancient monastery deserted a few decades ago, close to the village of Hikkim (1/2 hour). The monastery has an inimitable location and the locals have appealing interpretations. Thereafter we will move to Asia’s chief village, Komic where we can spend the night in a traditional homestay. Komic is also adorned by a legendary monastery. The day affords an enthralling insight into the Spiti way of life.

Day 06:

Komic to Dhankar (3890m)

On this day after having breakfast, we will start early at 7 am. From here we will hire the local mode of transport, yaks. We can get a chance to explore the Trans-Himalayan Deserts and travel into the grazing pastures of the local livestock and wild animals such as the Blue Sheep. It is believed to be a hunting ground for the Tibetan Wolf and Snow Leopard. If lucky we might get a glimpse of the Wolfs. We travel to a vantage point from where 18 villages of Spiti are visible (4-5 hours). After returning from this spot, we can stop at the neighboring village of Demul. It is famous for its local brew and cultural performances. From here we head to Dhankar, the former capital of Spiti. This journey will take 2 hours by jeep. We will spend the night here in home stays.

Day 07:

Dhankar to Tabo (3050m)

Dhankar village which was the former capital of Spiti, also houses an ancient Monastery perched precariously between unique winds and eroded structures. Leftovers of the Dhankar Fort, which housed the royal family of Spiti, still remain. We will visit the Monastery, Fort and other subsidiary temples leaves one spell bound at the traditional architectural marvels. The Monastery has some interesting wall murals and thankas. From Dhankar we will move to the neighboring village of Lhalung, which takes 1 hour. After this we will visit the Sarkhang — a local temple. Thereafter we will drive up to 2-3 hrs to reach Tabo, where we spend the night. Stay overnight in Hotel or in Monastery or in Guesthouse.

Day 08:

Tabo to Kaza (3686m)

On this day we will go to visit Tabo. It is famous for its 1004 years old Monastery. In 1996, the Tabo monastery celebrated its thousand years with a Kalachakra ceremony.

We can spend time in exploring the Monastery and there are numerous temples at the monastery. After this we move to Giu which will take one hr. Here you can see a mummy. After that, we will get back to Kaza, where we will spend the night in a hotel or in a Guesthouse.

Day 09:

Kaza to Manali (2050m) 10-12 hrs

After an early breakfast we will drive back to Manali through the same route that we took to reach Kaza. While going back to Manali we will visit Chandra Tal, the lake of the moon goddess. After crossing Kunzam La (4551 mts) we will take a short trip to Chandra Tal (4270 mts), which is located between a low edge and the main Kunzam range with an outlet into the Chandra River.

Day 10:

Manali to Delhi

Trip ends. After having breakfast, we will drive back to Delhi – a 10 to 11 hrs journey.
