Start your day with a hotel pickup from Reykjavik by a spacious 4x4 jeep – custom built to drive smoothly across the demanding Icelanic terrain – and then set off to explore the Golden Circle, a 186-mile (300-km) scenic loop that circles the countryside around the capital. First stop is Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the site of the world’s longest-running parliament. Hear about the Icelandic Vikings who set up parliament in the area, and stand in the place where the tectonic plates of North America and Europe are said to meet.
After stretching your legs on a gentle stroll around, return to your jeep and travel to Lake Thingvallavatn in the heart of the park. The lake is best known for a natural rift called Silfra Fissure that forms part of the boundary between the North American and European tectonic plates.
Head into the snorkel center to get changed (equipment provided) and listen to a snorkeling briefing from your guide. Then, follow the lead of your guide into the famously clear waters and snorkel between two continents! The visibility at Silfra Fissure is renowned, and you can even see down to the lava fields, some 328 feet (100 meters) below.
Freshen up with a shower back on dry ground, and break for lunch (own expense). Hop back inside your 4x4 and travel through the valley of Haukadalur, a geothermal region studded with incredible geysers (hot springs that blast water and steam into the air). Stop for photos at Geysir, one of the area’s most impressive springs, and then walk around nearby Gulfoss – an impressive waterfall that thunders down Hvítá River’s canyon.
Having explored the area, seeing its impressive hot springs and waterfalls, return to Reykjavik. Your tour finishes at your hotel.
