We will visit the first town of the Danube Band, «Saint Andrew», Szentendre, the little baroque style town, also called «the Montmarte of the Danube» (Claudio Magris).
Before the artist moved in at the turn of the last century, Szentendre's character had been formed by waves of refugees from Serbia escaping from the Turks. After the Turkish occupation in Hungary, new waves of Serbian, Albanians, Bosnians and Greeks families arrived here making Szentendre the seat of Serbian Orthodox church. After the 1880s, most of them returned to Serbia and now only about 70 families of Serbian descent still live here today.
Explore this friendly little town, with its cheerfully painted little houses, secretive small courtyards full of boutiques and narrow lanes winding up to the hilltop churches.
