While in Budapest, take a journey back in time and see what life was like in Hungary during its 50-year history of communism. Your local guide will explain how it all started - learn about how Big Brother controlled the citizens and hear stories about life behind the Iron Curtain. Visit the fascinating communist-related exhibitions in Memento Park, and explore a section of the park, Statue Park, featuring statues of Lenin, Stalin and other historical communist figures.
Make your way to the meeting point in central Budapest where you'll meet staff members from Memento Park, who'll accompany you on the bus to the park. Upon arrival, you'll be divided into groups and with your guide you'll make a trip back to the Iron Curtain, the symbolic divider of Western and Eastern Europe after World War 2. Within this park lies Statue Park, where 42 pieces of art from the communist era are displayed. With your knowledgeable guide, learn about the symbolism of the statues of Lenin, Marx, Engels, Stalin and many others as you tour the park with your guide.
Here, visit several communist-themed exhibitions. Discover real features of a traditional Hungarian home through typical furniture and furnishings, including a teal Trabant car, a trademark East German vehicle and iconic Hungarian family car. Watch an educational film and learn about Hungarian spying and counter espionage techniques used by Soviet soldiers.
Gain an understanding of the propaganda Hungary once lived under by viewing an extensive collection of communist- related relics such as red and blue passports, a party member's registration book, pins, medals, currency and huge placards.
After gaining extensive insight into this tumultuous period of history, your coach will return you back to central Budapest to the end your tour.
