The Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall measured approximately 155km. For one side it was a “death strip”, for the other an “anti-fascist barricade”.

Memories from the perspective of the West evoke images of a colourfully graffitied wall, which tempts some into now saying “It wasn’t really that high”.

The wall itself actually had very little meaning for the East Germans, as there were so many barriers, interior walls, signal boxes and other similar things that it was almost impossible to actually reach the main wall.

Even today, the infrastructure in many areas near to where the wall used to lie has not fully returned, as what is nowadays central was previously the outskirts of the city.

Tour route

Our tours all begin at the Eberswalder Straße Subway Station. We will very quickly reach the Wall Park, with its remaining interior wall, and also the Bernauer Straße.

There we will learn a lot about the eviction and demolition of houses, last minute escapes and fleeing border soldiers.

As we travel further along the former border we will pass by many escape tunnels. Each of these tunnels has its own story.

We will then come to the Chapel of Reconciliation, which was built after the fall of the wall. The Church of Reconciliation which formerly stood there was blown up four years before the fall – we will explain how that could have happened.

Our final stop is the Berlin Wall Memorial, with an original border watchtower and information on the building of the border, remains of the wall and stories of the victims.
