Your guide will meet you at your centrally-located Munich hotel. It is also possible to arrange to simply meet your guide at the Munich Central Station if you prefer. From the station you will take a train to Dachau where a bus will then transport you to the Concentration Camp Memorial.
In its petrifying prime, Dachau was referred to as the ‘parent camp’; it was the originator, role-model and training ground for the genocide during the Third Reich. A staggering range of persecuted people were sent to Dachau – communists, German dissidents, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Jews and Poles – and the camp’s total intake is estimated to have hit just less than 210,000.
While the camp as it stands today is a memorial site, many of its original features still stand – serving as poignant reminders of a time in history that should never be forgotten. Explore the site with your guide, seeing the gatehouse with its iconic Arbeit macht frei (work makes you free) gateway, a bunker and crematorium. Visit the administration headquarters where fates were decided, and see the rail platform where prisoners once arrived.
As you walk around, listen to your guide giving the background on each site, learning about well-known Nazis whose names were linked to the camp. The feared leader Heinrich Himmler set up Dachau, and Theodore Eicke later used it as a place to train his SS (Nazi secret police) guards.
