Step back in time and learn all about the historic town of Versailles on this fascinating walking tour. Your knowledgeable guide will tell you anecdotes and stories that bring the past to life as you visit locations including the King’s Kitchen Garden, the Municipal Library and the Royal Tennis Court. Afterward, head to Monument Café near the Palace of Versailles and enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet lunch including French specialties such as snails and frog legs.

This small-group tour is limited to 20 people to create a more laid-back, intimate experience.

Meet your guide at the Versailles train station to begin your walking tour of Versailles. Head toward the famous Palace of Versailles and stop at the Louix XIV statue in the Place d'Armes, the square in front of the palace.

Your knowledgeable guide will tell you about the history and construction of the town and Palace of Versailles and the lives of the four kings (all named Louis) who made Versailles their official residence. Hear amusing anecdotes about other famous figures in the history of Versailles as well, including Marie Antoinette, Lafayette and Napoleon.

Your guide will then concentrate on one of the two districts of Versailles, the Saint Louis district, and take you to several historic locations. Visit the Municipal Library, where the Treaty of Versailles ratifying the independence of the United States was signed in 1783, and see the Royal Tennis Court, where the French Revolution began in 1789.

You'll also view the King's Kitchen Garden, started by Louis XIV to provide fresh produce for meals at the Palace of Versailles, and admire Versailles Cathedral, the oldest church in Versailles. See the old market squares, Carrés St-Louis, developed during Louis XV's reign, and the house where he kept his mistresses. Also, discover the bakery where the 'Women's March on Versailles' over the scarcity of bread began in 1789 during the French Revolution.

Finish your 1.5-hour tour at Monument Café, where you can marvel at a scale model of the Palace of Versailles. Indulge in an all-you-can-eat French buffet lunch including snails and frog legs, plus one drink (your choice of a soft drink, hot drink, beer or wine). Your educational tour of old Versailles ends here, leaving you time to visit the Palace of Versailles on your own. Your guide can point you in the right direction and offer recommendations for getting the most out of your visit to the palace.
