Giverny, Chatou and Orangerie may not ring a bell straight away but there’s a good chance you’ll feel a sense of déjà vu during this full-day themed tour to Giverny, Chatou and the Orangerie Museum, three locations closely associated with impressionist art.
Begin this cultural journey at Giverny, the picturesque Norman hamlet that in the late 19th century became an impressionist colony dominated by the father of the movement, Claude Monet. He lived and died here, and you will enjoy a guided tour of his gardens and the famous pond – the inspiration for his celebrated Water Lilies paintings. You also have free time to wander his home.
Head to Chatou for lunch at an artists’ hangout in what is now popularly known as Impressionists’ Island. This long isle in the River Seine features in many impressionist works, the most famous of which is Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party. It was painted at La Maison Fournaise, where you will have lunch.
Return to Paris for an audioguide visit to the Orangerie Museum, which is located in the Tuileries Gardens and houses a rich collection of impressionist and post-impressionist works. The tour ends with an hour-long guided Seine cruise – based on the history of impressionist movement – which will end at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.
