Day trip to Tiya Steles and the rock hewn church of Adadi Mariam

This is almost a full day trip from Addis Ababa to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Steleas at Tiya which marks graves of herors from the 12th to the 14th Century. These steleas are decorated with beautiful carvings of leaves of False Banana trees and swords. The other interesting site during this day trip is the rock hewn church of Adadi Mariam which is  believed to be carved out of a single piece of rock by King Lalibela in the 13th Century AD. The drive to the Tiya Steleas offer a wonderful view of the Great East African Rift Valley and visits of the villages of the Oromo people.
