Cairo experience (Revolution Square)

Your visit to Egypt is never complete unless you see the capital city of Cairo. A trip to Cairo is undoubtedly an «eye-opener». Cairo offers so much to see and do. In Cairo, a city with 5000 years of history, one easily sees different layers of civilizations one atop the other. Every single day you expect to see something entirely different. So a few days in Cairo feel like a lifetime !!

Cairo has a lot to live up to; the jewel of the Orient, the city of a thousand minarets, the city of the Arabian nights and the melting-pot of ancient and modern civilizations are just a few of its monikers. To take in some of the city's magnitude, visit theEgyptian Museum, Tahrir Square, the Citadel of Saladin, the Alabaster mosque and the Grand Bazaar.

One of the most interesting tourist attractions in Cairo, the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities houses the best artefacts ever made by the Pharaohs in 3000 years. Built by the French between 1897 and 1901, the Museum is considered one of the most attractive buildings in modern Cairo with its beautiful European architecture and decoration.

Currently it is home to the breath-taking collection of the popular boy-king Tutankamun including the brilliant golden mask. Made out of pure gold and inlaid with semi-precious stones, this mask is certainly one of the best artefcats ever made by man. It's a masterpiece by all means. At the museum you also see the incredible mummies with their finger nails, teeth, tissue and hair. They are so lifelike that it's hard to believe that they are some 4000 years old.

Visit Tahrir Square where the recent Revolution took place on January, 25th, 2011. Learn how the Egyptians still make history.

Dating back to the 12th century, the Citadel of Saladin is one of the very few examples of military architecture in the whole of Cairo. Built on higher ground, the Citadel overlooks the entire old capital where the view is amazing. It's worth taking a lot of pictures here. This castle used to be home to the kings of Egypt in the Middle Ages between the 12th and the 19th centuries.

Now the Citadel houses the most attractive mosque in Cairo: the Alabaster mosque. Constructed in Ottoman style, the Alabaster mosque is a model of some Turkish mosques like the Blue Mosque and the Mosque of Sultan Ahmed. The mosque is famous for its beautiful casing made of local alabaster, hence the name of the mosque. Its floor is covered in beautiful Carrara marble from Italy.

The area of the Grand Bazaar still stimulates the imagination. Located in the heart of Old Cairo, the tourist market, known as Khan el-Khalili, is where you can find treasures and junk, browse and bargain and have things made just for you or buy a pharaonic replica made of genuine ebony.

Amongst the best buy in the market are spices, herbs and dates. When in Rome, you do as the Romans do. So when you go to the market you should have a refreshing glass of mint tea and smoke the traditional water-pipe.
