Alexandria, The Pearl Of The Mediterranean
Egypt is not just the Pyramids and the Sphinx. It's much more than that. Your visit to Egypt is never complete unless you do Alexandria, the most attractive city in the entire country. Every body associates Alexandria with Alexander the Great, Cleopatra, Antony, Julius Caeasr, Octavius, St.Mark and Cavafis (the famous Greek poet).
Founded by Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC, Alexandria became Egypt's capital city for one entire millennium under the Greeks and the Romans. Having become the world's center of learning and scholarship, this city witnessed the establishment of the Library «Biblioteca Alexandrina». The Library housed tons of scrolls speaking about the world's heritage in the form of literature, maths, geography, sciences .....etc. It's little wonder Alexandria always attracted many great scientists, mathematicians, poets, scholars and politicians.
In the 1st century St.Mark arrived into Alexandria and introduced Christianity. In a few centuries the Church of Alexandria became as important as the Churches of Rome and Constantinople. For quite a long time this city was the seat of the Egyptian Patriarch.
Modern Alexandria is as beautiful and interesting as the ancient city. It's a tourist, commercial and industrial center. It has lots of impressive monuments built by the Greeks and the Romans: temples, catacombs, amphitheatres, pillars and baths. The Light House, one of the wonders of the ancient world, was also here.
The modern city is also a port receiving a lot of trade from Europe and the United States. It has beautiful European arcitecture as lots of British, French, Italians and Greeks lived there in colonial times.
