Day of the Dead in Ecuador: Quito City Tour, Middle of the Earth Monument and San Diego Cemetery

Celebrate Ecuador's Day of the Dead festivities with a Quito city tour that takes you to the spooky San Diego Cemetery and the Middle of the Earth monument. Enjoy a panoramic tour of Quito, from the financial district to the city center's Plaza de la Independencia, and cross the line separating the Northern and Southern Hemispheres at Middle of the World City.

Your Day of the Dead tour begins with a panoramic tour through Quito financial and shopping districts. Travel through the neighborhood of La Mariscal, home to most of the city's hotels, then continue toward Quito's historical center.

Enjoy a visit at La Basilica Church (entrance fee at own expense) and San Diego Cemetery, where Ecuador's mix of local traditions and religious faith are creatively expressed. See why the cemetery is known as 'the Corner of Souls', with its once-grand tombs and eerie paths lined with spooky angels, crosses and other statues. Created in the 19th century, the San Diego cemetery is a place of rest for many famous Ecuadorians and is decorated in colorful flowers and is one of the most ideal places to learn about the history and culture behind the Day of the Dead.

Your panoramic city tour also includes entry to El Panecillo, for beautiful views of colonial and modern-day Quito. Visit the church of San Francisco and Plaza de la Independencia (Independence square), and take a walk through the colonial-era streets to see the cathedral, the Governor's Palace and La Compañía Church, with its gold decoration and altars.

In the afternoon, your tour continues to the northern part of the city for entry to the Middle of the World City. See the famous monument that divides the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, built during the 17th century when a French expedition defined the precise location of the equatorial line.

At the end of your tour, you can stay on to visit either the Intiñan Museum (Equator Museum) or the Ethnographic Museum (entrance fee at own expense) before being transported back to your Quito hotel. Additional Info
