We drive along the picturesque coastline through the famous seaside resorts of Makarska Riviera up to the fertile Neretva River Delta, where the road turns inland towards the interior of Bosnia and Herzegovina, till we reach Počitelj, a mystic little town with an ancient Turkish fortification. The Catholics begin to build this village in the 15th century, but the Ottomans ended it over 100 years later.
After a short rest we continue our drive along the river valley to Mostar – “a window to the Orient” and an important trade center during the Turkish rule. A guided tour will show us the town highlights, we shall visit the Oriental part of the town with the old Bazaar, full of picturesque shops and work-shops, the Mosque and a typical Turkish house, then walk along the legendary Turkish bridge from the 16thcentury, after which the town was named (most=bridge).
It is hard to sum up the uniqueness of this multi-faceted city – East and West meet on the gleaming, turquoise river in a blend of oriental architecture, Mediterranean air and Balkan beauty.
The bridge is Mostar’s core and its reconstruction means that life is slowly but surely returning to normal in what is most certainly the most beautiful city in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
When the Stari most, or Old Bridge, collapsed from tank shelling in 1993, it was like the heart was ripped out of most Mostar natives. Even mentioning the bridge for years after it fell to the bottom of the Neretva River, could invoke tears.
We leave Mostar late in the afternoon driving across the Biokovo massif which offers a magnificent view of the Central Dalmatia and its islands.
