This isolated city set high in the Atacama desert and surrounded by towering snowcapped volcanoes is the must see destination of northern Chile. The tour starts with a visit to the famous Valley of the Moon and surrounding salt caverns. The Atacama is one of the few places on earth that you can see salt structures on the surface of the planet due to the extreme aridity. A visit to the vast Salar de Atacama is a great opportunity to see the largest salt flat in Chile and if lucky flamingoes. The highlight of the trip might be the visit to the Geysers of Tatio a geothermal area located above 4000m. The beautiful geysers and hot springs set against the backdrop of the Andes are a sight to behold. You will stay in the small town of San Pedro de Atacama for the duration and each trip will be a daily excursion.  The hotel is the Hosteria San Pedro de Atacama a comfortable property offering wifi and swimming pool.

Day 1

We will pick you up from the airport at Calama and transfer your hotel in San Pedro.

Day 2

In the afternoon, tour the famous Valley of the Moon, located approximately 10 kms. The arid environment results in the beautiful shapes and colors of the geologic formations of Valley of the Moon. Visit the salt statues "Las Tres Marias" and see the salt caverns. Climb up the big dune at sunset to admire this beautiful panorama. Return to the town of San Pedro de Atacama. Arrival approx. 20:00

Day 3

Visit Al Pukara Quitor a historic defensive structure dating from the twelfth century. Next we visit Ayllu of Tulor an archaeological site dating to ca. 3000 years. Composed of circular rooms connected to each other and with a common courtyard it is an exciting visit. Return to San Pedro.

Day 4

Heading to Toconao, the road goes straight across the plain with stunning views of the volcano Licancabur. On arrival we take a short break and make a brief visit to the main square and church. Then we head to the Salar de Atacama, located in the Flemish national reserve at an altitude of 2,305m. The Salar occupies an area over 400 square kilometers making it the largest salt deposit in Chile. We are likely to see a number of different bird species and if we are lucky flamingos. Return to San Pedro Town.

Day 5

We make a trip of 97km to the Geysers of Tatio located at an altitude of 4,300m. We make this drive starting very early in the morning so that by the time we arrive its 06:45. The temperature at this altitude in the morning is generally below freezing so dress accordingly. We take breakfast and walk to the geothermal field to watch the geysers, fumaroles and hundreds of pools of boiling water. It is a spectacular view set against the backdrop of the surrounding Andes. We visit some hot pools for bathing before returning to San Pedro.

Day 6

Transfer Hotel - Airport or Calama Bus Terminal.
