Discover the treasures and legacy of Pablo Neruda, the famous Chilean Nobel Prize Laureate, and one of the most widely translated poets of this century. You may also know of him from the Foreign Film Academy’s acclaimed “Il Postino” (The Postman). Your tour begins with a drive into the labyrinth of streets that stretch over the many hillsides facing the bay of Valparaiso. This maze of winding streets offers incredible views of the imaginative architecture and bright colours of centenarian homes built by the first Europeans to settle in the city. Enjoy the breathtaking panorama of the bay as you enter the third of Neruda’s three Chilean homes, "La Sebastiana". La Sebastiana was bought by Neruda and two of his friends, a married couple, while still under construction. They divided the property, the ground floor and first floor on one side for his friends and the four floors on the other side for the poet. Each set to finish the building according to their own personal taste. Pablo Neruda filled his side with colour, antiques and staircases, as if his home was the city of Valparaiso itself. Next, you’ll travel to the village Isla Negra, located on the coast between Valparaiso and Santiago. Neruda enjoyed a great fortune and spent it mainly on the very human pursuits of travelling, collecting and entertaining. Overlooking the sea, Isla Negra was an escape from the bustle of Santiago and a writing retreat. The house today contains many of his personal belongings, antiques, and his eclectic collections of nautical items - most notably ship mastheads, indigenous masks, and antique glassware. By his request, Neruda and his wife Matilde are buried at Isla Negra looking out over the source of inspiration for many of his poems: the Pacific Ocean.
