Visit to the Zemen Monastery. The 11th century church «John the Evangelist» part of the complex is a typical representative of the Bulgarian Mediaeval church architecture. The murals presenting moments from the Holy Bible are its greatest treasure.
Kyustendil was founded in the 5th century B.C. by the Thracian tribes who settled here attracted by the hot mineral springs. In the 1st century A.D. the Romans turned it into a town named Pautalia which translated means «city of the spring». They built ancient baths as well as strong fortress wall which remains can be still seen nowadays. Remarkable places of interest are the Ahmed Bey Mosque, the medieval Tower and the Archeological Museum. Here is the art gallery named after the greatest Bulgarian artist Vladimir Dimitrov – the master, the house-museum of Dimitar Peshev – the man who helped saving the Bulgarian jews during the Second World War.
