Full Day: Rila Monastery & Melnik

In the afternoon, we head southwards to Rila Monastery (UNESCO), the biggest monastery and probably the most famous monument in the country, situated in the Rila Mountains. Behind the 20-metre high walls lie impressive monastery buildings, a church and chapels with valuable murals. Melnik is the smallest in Bulgaria, has architecture preserved from the 18^th and 19^th centuries, but is also famous for its stunning surroundings, its lively spirit, its full-bodied red wine and the largest Revival Period house in the Balkans (included in the itinerary).
