Koprivshtitsa overview

Koprivshtitsa (from the Bulgarian word kopriva, meaning «nettle») is a historic town in Sofia Province, central Bulgaria, lying on the Topolnitsa River among the Sredna Gora mountains. It was the hearth of the April Uprising in 1876 and is known for its authentic Bulgarian architecture and for its folk music festivals. Koprivshtitsais one of the characteristic Bulgarian towns, still preserving the atmosphere of the Bulgarian National Revival period of the 19th century. The town is huddled in the mountain folds 120 km east of Sofia. The town boasts 383 architectural monuments from the period, most of them restored to their original appearance. Collections of ethnographic treasures, old weapons, National Revival works of art, fine fretwork, household weaves and embroidery, national costumes and typical Bulgarian jewelry have also been preserved. It was here that the first shot of the April Uprising against the Ottoman Occupation was fired in 1876.

Your Day in Koprivshtitsa

We start this relaxed  tour with a 2-hour scenic drive along the Balkan range — pastures, meadows, forests and small towns. Before noon we will visit 3 houses-museums, where you will be let through the 19th century late Ottoman period and the Bulgarian Revival, preparation of the Revolution against the Turks and the occupation of Bulgarian ordinary people. We will also see the beautiful church before we have lunch in some local tavern, if the weather permits we sit outside. The other 3 houses-museums we visit in the afternoon and then we go back to Sofia. Please note: only 3 houses are open on Mondays and Tuesdays, so we suggest any other day of the week, or if you go on Monday or Tuesday, we suggest you combine the visit with Starosel (Tharcian Tomb) — please see our offer below.
