In the south-eastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in Popovo Polje, is located the largest cave system - Vjetrnica. This is also the largest and most famous cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a protected natural monument and tourist destination. It is located 300m east of Zavala, in the municipality of Ravno and 12 km away from place Slano on the Adriatic coast, and 80 km from the city of Mostar. It was named after a strong wind constantly blowing at the entrance to the cave, which on hot summer days is a natural coolant. Specialties of these unique caves are magical beauty, wide corridors and halls, numerous clusters of icicles, and a rich hydrographic world with numerous lakes, several waterfalls, permanent streams and dozens of smaller streams flowing in different directions. A total of 6,300 meters of underground channels have been discovered. In Vjetrenica the remains of bones of bears and leopards have been discovered, as well as drawings over 10,000 years old. The cave is a protected natural monument since 1950.
