Small-Group History of Fremantle Walking Tour

Discover the historic port city of Fremantle, just south of Perth, on a small-group walking tour. Wander the old streets and laneways, and learn about Fremantle’s rich, diverse history that is reflected in its colorful inhabitants, great food and well-preserved architecture. Visit the infamous Fremantle Gaol and end your tour on the vibrant Cappuccino Strip, the city’s lively stretch of popular restaurants and cafes. This tour is limited to just 12 people, providing a small-group atmosphere to explore with a local guide.

Originally a fishing port, Fremantle has reinvented itself over the years to become a vibrant hub for local artisans – from micro breweries to fashion designers to cafes, all wrapped up in a lively music scene.

Meet your guide at the Fremantle Visitors Centre, and step back in time as you start your walking tour at the Town Hall, which opened in 1887 and has remained largely unchanged. This magnificent building has not lost any of its grandeur and charm over the years and continues to be a great example of 19th-century architecture.

Next, wind your way down the narrow streets, stopping for photo opportunities and a bit of storytelling from your guide on the way to the Fremantle Gaol. This notorious prison – part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Australian Convict Sites – was built in the 1850s by convict labor and decommissioned as a maximum-security jail in 1991. From death row, to solitary cells to the gallows that hanged 43 men and one woman, you will hear the stories of crime and punishment of some of the worst criminals in the state.

Walk along the Cappuccino Strip, passing the many cafes that offer prime people-watching along Fremantle’s most bustling street.

Your tour ends at the Fremantle Roundhouse, Western Australia's oldest building.

The total distance walking is approximately 2 miles (3 km).
