Bush Tucker Indigenous Food Tour from Ayers Rock

From termites to kangaroos, finger limes to desert plums, experience the weird and wonderful on a traditional bush tucker (outback food) tour from Ayers Rock. Learn about the different plants and animals that indigenous people have used for food and medicines and the traditions that have been passed down through the generations.

Ever since the Dreamtime (creation of the earth) indigenous people have used plants and animals for both nutrition and medicine. From termites to kangaroos, finger limes to desert plums, you will learn the secrets to bush tucker as told by a local Anangu (indigenous) guide.

Before the invention of microwaves and ovens, the indigenous people cooked their food upon hot coals or wrapped food in the bark of trees to be placed in a ground oven. Seed and nuts were ground to make dough for bread and plants and flowers were used as spices and to treat ailments. You will be shown the different methods of collecting and cooking the food before tasting a selection on bush tucker -- some which have now become highly sought after gourmet items and are featured in top restaurants around the world. Your guide will also give you an insight to Indigenous culture, the connection to the land and life in the harsh outback deserts.
