Start your day with a hotel pickup from Victoria Falls, and then travel to the nearby banks of the Zambezi River. Head inside the base center to meet your instructor and enjoy a hot drink and a biscuit while chatting about the day that lies ahead. With the exception of a bathing suit, all other equipment (raft, river board, fins, life jacket, helmet and wetsuit) is provided, and your instructor will ensure everything is fitted before leaving the base center.
Then, follow your instructor along the steep trail that leads to Bakota Gorge, a spectacular sandstone canyon just below the stretch of waterfalls known collectively as Victoria Falls. At the water’s edge, head into the water and start your adventure.
Alternate between river boarding—surfing the rapids on a body board—and rafting aboard an inflatable raft with 8 other people and your onboard instructor. Experience isn’t necessary as your instructor gives plenty of advice and tuition, but the session isn’t for the faint hearted; falling from the raft or slipping off the board is part of the experience and you’ll be required to paddle and swim vigorously!
The Zambezi River is classed as a ‘grade 5’ stretch of water, meaning it’s fast flowing and challenging to navigate with long and fast-moving rapids, steep gradients, big drops and countless pressure areas. Your instructor knows the area well and will tell you to swap between river boarding and rafting as the river conditions dictate.
Roughly halfway through your day, stop to refuel with a light lunch at a cafe on the side of the gorge, and then return to your River Zambezi adventure feeling revived. Toward the end of the experience, your route progresses to the more demanding part of the river, culminating with stronger rapids and big waves.
Return to shore, climb back out of the gorge to return to the base center, and then freshen up with a shower. Your experience then finishes with a hotel drop-off at Victoria Falls.
