The White City, the Rainbow City, and 80 Acres of Hell

Additional

Before the White City graced our shores in 1893, Chicago was known as the Black City. This was in reference to the sky filled with smoke and the buildings covered in soot. But it could have been a description the sordid history that lies within.

Deep in the heart of our town, during the most blood-soaked days of the Civil War, was the most infamous prisoner of war camp, Camp Douglas. It was the breeding ground of disease and death and the future birthplace of softball(!).

As stone's-throw from Camp Douglas is the site of the Rainbow City, Chicago's Century in Progress World's Fair of 1933. This two-year-event spawned many things, including the Sally Rand and her fans - both kinds!

Streamming south from here is the legendary campus of the White City, the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893... and much of its magic! This includes the Midway, the Wooded Island and, of course, the Devil himself, Dr. H.H.Holmes!
