This historic gold-mining tour takes you on a journey to the height of the Alaska Gold Rush. Traveling from Anchorage along the Turnagain Arm to Girwood, nestled in the Chugach Mountains, you'll feel as if you've traveled back to the 1800s as you try your hand at panning for gold at Crow Creek Mine with the help of your expert guide. At your selected tour time, you'll be picked up at your Anchorage hotel taken on a scenic drive 42 miles (68 km) southeast. You'll be provided with snacks and water as you drive along Cook Inlet and the beautiful Turnagain Arm to Girdwood, a ski resort community nestled in a valley in the Chugach Mountains and surrounded by seven permanent glaciers.
Arriving at Crow Creek Mine, you'll feel as if you've traveled back in time to the late 1800s, the height of the Gold Rush in Alaska. Established in 1896, this was one of the largest hydraulic placer gold mines in South Central Alaska and today is arguably the state's most popular recreational gold-mining area.
See historic buildings, antiques, miner cabins and rare mining equipment, and meet a real gold prospector's family. Then, follow your guide on a walk through the gardens to Crow Creek, where you'll try your hand at panning for gold. Your guide will instruct you on basic panning skills, and teach you tricks of the trade that miners have been using for decades. With the upgrade, you'll get to use a sluice box, a great method of finding gold faster!
After your gold-mining experience, you'll be taken back to your Anchorage hotel.
