Stonehenge, Portsmouth and Winchester Day Trip from London

Watch British history come alive with a full-day sightseeing trip to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, home to the Mary Rose and other venerable warships; the Great Hall in Winchester where King Arthur’s Round Table is located; and the prehistoric grounds of Stonehenge. You’ll visit these important sites with an experienced local guide who will share stories from England's history. After morning pickup, you’ll travel about 75 miles (120km) in a comfortable coach to the coast where you’ll visit the Mary Rose Museum, the new centerpiece of the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

In the Mary Rose Museum you’ll learn about the Tudor ship the Mary Rose, the only 16th century warship on display in the world. She was built in 1510 and sunk in 1545, then discovered and raised more than 30 years ago. Thousands of personal belongings from the ship have been recovered, creating the most comprehensive collection of Tudor artifacts in the world.

You’ll also see the HMS Victory, which led the English to victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 under the command of Lord Nelson, Britain’s greatest naval hero. Then you’ll take a short cruise to spot the submarines and modern warships stationed in this historic harbor.

After taking in the naval highlights of Britain, you’ll have free time for lunch (own expense) before continuing 30 minutes further to the ancient town of Winchester, famous for King Arthur's Round Table. For more than 700 years, the table has sat in the Great Hall, which is all that remains of Winchester Castle. You’ll hear tales of the Knights of the Round Table from your guide and check out the statue of King Arthur.

Next, go far back in time with a visit to Stonehenge, one of the most famous prehistoric monuments in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The significance of this collection of large stones, carefully placed on the site some 5,000 years ago, continues to intrigue scholars and visitors. Walk around and decide for yourself whether this noteworthy feat of ancient engineering was intended for worship, burials, or something altogether different.

At the end of your day tour, your guide will return you to your starting point in London.
