Be truly mesmerised while you gain an insight into Thailand’s sporting culture by witnessing the nation’s national obsession, ‘Muay Thai’ (or Thai kickboxing). Watch this now internationally acclaimed sport at the fighting gala on Friday nights at the Suwit Boxing Stadium in Phuket.
Muay Thai kickboxing is one of the most popular spectator sports in Thailand and one of the world’s most hypnotic combat sports. It has a long history in Thailand. A visit on a Friday night to the Suwit Boxing Stadium is a must-do activity for anyone staying in this part of Thailand. The sport focuses on an array of kickboxing styles that use the knees elbows, shins and fists and requires immense physical and mental discipline. The adrenaline-filled night begins with fighters getting buffed with liniment while their handlers ensure that their legs are stretched. The atmosphere is electric as the crowd and fighters prepare for the fights to begin. The difference between this and television wrestling is that none of the action is choreographed, and you are observing true fights. Once the sport begins you will not be able to tear your eyes away from the action as the speed and skills of the sport become apparent and the crowd jostles and cheers. Some movements increase to such speed that your eye won’t be able to take it all in. You will have the chance to watch 8 matches per night from the comfort of a ringside seat.
Meeting/pick-up point: Boxing Stadium.
