Private: Gaudí Tour

Explore the world of visionary architect Antoni Gaudi in this half-day fully guided private tour of some of his most important buildings in the city of Barcelona. In the company of a knowledgeable local guide you will beat the queues and tour his unfinished masterwork, the Basilica of La Sagrada Familia, striking Casa Batllo and Casa Milà on the Passeig de Gracia and the unique Parc Guell where architecture blends seamlessly with nature.

The tour will start on the Passeig de Gracia, one of Barcelona's classiest boulevards and home to many buildings in the modernista style. First we'll visit Casa Batllo, also known as the house of bones due to its striking façade. Visit the Noble Floor with its great views down over the sophisticated Passeig de Gracia. Explore the vast loft, once the Batllo family's laundry and storeroom and then step out on to the roof terrace, built to resemble a dragon's back with its amazing chimneys.

Next stop is Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera. This building is a reflection of the artistic and imaginative powers of Gaudí in his prime. The architect’s great creative freedom and imaginative ornamental designs are visible in every detail, from the wrought iron balconies, the painted frescoes and the roof terrace, known as the garden of warriors with its famous chimney stacks, bearing a resemblance to helmeted warriors. Gaudi was initially inspired by certain great baroque works but over time developed structural shapes and volumes devoid of rational rigidity or any classic premise and the whole building was built around the symbolism of the ship of life.

Then we'll move on to the Parc Guell. These gardens were first commissioned by the Guell family as a part of a landscaped housing development. However the venture was unsuccessful and the area was bought up by the municipality and turned into a public park. On this guided walking tour you'll see all the main features. The colourful dragon staircase with its mosaic of broken tiles. The large central terrace surrounded by a snaking series of benches in the form of a sea serpent. Go down below the terrace to the vaulted lower court with 86 Doric columns in the form of massive tree trunks. Walk along the colonnaded pathways and see how Gaudi integrated nature with architecture. He even built birds nests into the walkways and terrace walls.

The last stop is the Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's unfinished masterpiece. The Basilica can be seen a synthesis of the great architect's overall conception of architecture. Your guide will point out the richness of detail and explaining its meaning so you can appreciate this fascinating and extraordinary building in full. You will also have plenty of time to stay on and explore the building for yourself. Take a lift up to the top of the towers, visit the crypt and museum and compare the contrasting styles of the Birth and Passion façades.
