Have a great day out on the neighbouring island of Lanzarote. The whole island was declared part of UNESCO's Biosphere Reserve System in 1993 and you'll be impressed by the moonlike volcanic landscapes of this easternmost of the Canary Islands. The island was born through fiery eruptions and you’ll find plenty of solidified lava streams, extravagant rock formations and the ever present work of local artist Cesar Manrique.
This magical day begins at Tenerife South airport where we'll catch an early flight across to Arrecife, Lanzarote's sleepy capital. From here we'll head straight for Timanfaya, the Mountain of Fire. This National Park, a moonscape of desolate lava fields and weird rock formation was formed by a massive volcanic eruption in the 18th Century. Here you can experiment the volcanic activity of the area for yourself and even try a meal cooked by volcanic heat.
Then it's time for a relaxing camel ride through the stunning landscapes before we drive up to the northern part of the island, stopping at the Laguna Verde, an incredible submerged volcanic crater containing a lagoon with green waters, on the way.
We'll also stop for lunch and breakfast consisting of traditional island specialities. Lanzarote is also well known for its fine wines. You'll have plenty of opportunity to admire the sight of the bright green vines poking up out of the black volcanic soil, protected from the sun and wind by dry stone walls. We’ll make a stop at a local winery so you can try some of the wines for yourself.
One of the highlights of the trip has to be the visit to Jameos del Agua. The whole site is located in a tunnel produced by solidifying molten lava from an eruption of La Corona Volcano 3000 years ago. The system and of tunnels and connecting caves has been skilfully developed for viewing by local artist, Cesar Manrique, integrating vegetation, ambient music and tasteful lighting, making for an unforgettable experience.
Then we'll return along the coast road, heading back to Arrecife airport where we'll catch the plane back to Tenerife.
