Discover historical Granada, a fairy tale Moorish city nestling at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains. During the period of Islamic domination of Spain, Granada was one of the richest and most beautiful cities in the world. Now it is still home to the most important Muslim legacy in Europe and one of the world's most beautiful buildings, the 11th Century Alhambra. This day trip will take you to this magical city where you can lose yourself in the mists of a lost era.
After being picked up from your hotel we'll head for Granada through rolling countryside dotted with olive and almond trees. Once we arrive we'll visit the Alhambra and the Generalife Gardens. Nothing can really prepare you for this wonderland of exquisitely carved palaces, lush gardens and musical fountains hidden away behind an austere exterior. We'll visit the Alcazaba fortress, the Myrtle Courtyard, the Ambassadors' Hall, the Royal Baths and the Palace of Charles V. The Gardens of the Alhambra the most beguiling part of this visit. They were built as a retreat for the Moorish kings of the city and are rich with flowers, water features and shady nooks.
Then there will be some time for lunch and to explore the city at your own pace (for those not taking the lunch option) before we take a walk around the historical centre of Granada. This area contains many monuments to the might of Catholic Spain, including the impressive Gothic Cathedral, the Royal Chapel housing the tombs of King Fernando and Queen Isabella and the Alcaicería, the city's old silk market We'll also go for a stroll around the Albaicin, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed neighbourhood where you'll enjoy great views up to the Alhambra with the rose-tinted Sierra Nevada mountains in the background.
