Join us for the two most magical moments of summer 2013 in Mallorca. Watch the sun set while enjoying live orchestra performances overlooking the sea at the Barceló Formentor Hotel. On June 22, Mikhail Tatarnikov will conduct a spectacular performance of Prokofiev’s score for Akexander Nevsky, which will be screened simultaneously. Then, on September 13, Zubin Mehta will conduct three Beethoven favourites.
The setting could not be more stunning: the Barceló Formentor, perhaps the most beautifully located hotel in Mallorca. Ever since it was built in the Roaring Twenties, it has been a byword for luxury and sophistication. It was in this exclusive retreat that Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier spent part of their honeymoon. It was here that artists, writers, actors and statesmen such as Joan Miró, Robert Graves, Peter Ustinov, Joan Fontaine, Charlie Chaplin and Winston Churchill escaped from the pressures of global fame.
So on Saturday, June 22, sit back and enjoy Sergei Eisenstein’s epic movie, Alexander Nevsky. The score was composed by Prokofiev, who later reworked it into the Cantata opus 78, for mezzosoprano, choir and orchestra. While the film is projected, the score will be performed live by the Balearic Symphonic Orchestra conducted by Mikhail Tatarnikov, principal conductor of the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St Petersburg, and the choir directed by Larissa Gergieva, artistic director of the Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers.
On September 13, Zubin Mehta, music director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, will conduct the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra is performances of Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, his Symphony No.8 and Symphony No.3 Eroica.
