Why not take a trip to El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands? This remote island, situated to the south and west of Tenerife was for a long time considered to be end of the known world. You'll find a bewildering variety of landscapes here, from desolate lava fields and rugged rock formations in the south and west, lush fields in the fertile El Golfo valley, plantations of sub-tropical fruit and vineyards in the Northwest and dense pine and cloud forests in the mountainous centre.
The day starts with a short flight over from Tenerife North airport over to Valverde, the tiny capital of this remote island. After landing we'll head straight for the tiny fishing village of El Tamaduste with the striking contrast between the whitewashed sugarcube fishermen's cottages and the stark black volcanic landscape all around. Next we'll climb to the Mirador de la Peña, a breathtaking viewpoint, built and designed by renowned local artist Cesar Manrique. Here you can enjoy stunning views down over the verdant fertile valley of El Golfo.
Then in the northern part of the island, we'll stop at the Pozo de la Salud, a spring famous all over the island for the healing properties of its gushing waters before continuing on to the Hoya del Morallo, a recreational park in the heart of the fragrant pine forests that cover the surrounding hills. Next stop is the remote settlement of La Restinga. From here you can contemplate the effects of the recent volcanic activity in this area. We'll also make a photo stop at Mirador de las Playas for great views of the famous rock of La Bonanza. Then it's time to take the coast road back to Valverde, where you'll have some free time to explore this fascinating town before boarding the plane for the flight back to Tenerife.
