Learn all about the Serra de Tramuntana with a visit to the Costa Nord interpretative in the picture-postcard village of Valldemossa. For more than a decade the centre has been the first stop on the way to exploring this imposing mountain range that has captured the hearts of the likes of composer Frederic Chopin, Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria and Hollywood star Michael Douglas.
The centre was set up by Michael Douglas to promote the natural beauty and history of Mallorca, where he owns the Tramuntana property that once belonged to the archduke. You will be welcomed by a video presentation hosted by the actor, which covers history of the island, the beauty of the north and some of the characters who have lived here.
The centre went through an extensive renovation last year and now has a restaurant and auditorium. A replica of the Nixe, the boat with which the archduke explored the Balearics in the 19th century, has been recreated and you can ‘board’ it to relive his adventures.
Learn about the flora and fauna of the Tramuntana, which has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2011, the first in Mallorca. This vast range, which is snowcapped for much of the winter, dominates the north or the island. The rugged and rocky landscape is dominated by the 1,445 metre-high Puig Major and it also boasts scenic lakes such as Gorg Blau, while the isolated beach of Sa Calobra is a favourite of the locals.
Start/opening time: Open all days, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day between 9am and 5pm.
