A picture tells of a thousand wares during this chic shopping tour of Madrid that is dripping with nostalgia. The story of each store is told through a well-thumbed photo album full of sepia-tinted and black-and-white photographs from yesteryear. Experience a diversity of styles, shops and markets along Gran Vía and Calle Fuencarral, visiting modern outlets and small Bohemian operations.
The entertaining and knowledgeable guide shows you the Gran Via’s historic commercial hubs, the former cinemas and nightclubs that are now occupied by branded shops, all through his old photo album. See the Gran Via at the turn of the 20th century, when it was being built as Spain’s very own Broadway and was to become the neuralgic centre of the city, boasting entertainment venues and trendy shops in a dramatic architectural setting.
Calle Fuencarral is known for its alternative fashion shops aimed at urban sub-cultures. It is a street bursting with youthful zest and creativity. There are stores for hippies, goths, grungers, moshers, hip-hoppers, emos, mods and hipsters. These outlets live cheek by jowl with more sedate stores selling well-known international high street brands.
