Mpumalanga Super Saver: Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and Cheetah Breeding Project

Spend a day at two of Mpumalanga’s must-visit wildlife conservation centers in Hoedspruit on a full-day Super Saver tour! Combining two best-selling tours at a saving of 42% percent, the Super Saver comprises a morning walking tour around Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Center – home to thousands of injured and orphaned wild animals – as well as an afternoon at the nearby Cheetah Breeding Project. Watch a video at the center to learn about its cheetah-breeding program, and then see cheetah cubs and other endangered animals on a game drive around the enclosures.

Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Center Tour: (5 hours)
Leave your Mpumalanga lodge in the morning and travel to Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, situated in the shadow of the majestic Mariepskop Mountain in South Africa’s Limpopo Province.

On arrival, set off on your comprehensive walking tour around the center, home to many of South Africa’s abandoned or injured wildlife. This tranquil sanctuary is committed to the rescue and care of animals in need of refuge and rehabilitation, and is a highly regarded contributor to wildlife education and endangered animal conservation around the world.

Hear the story behind lions that were abandoned from an Egyptian circus, and learn about the progress of injured raptors, poisoned vultures and orphaned cheetahs, wild dogs, leopards, honey badgers and more. Discover how the animals are rehabilitated with the center’s help, and learn all about the daily work. Animal lover or not, you're sure to be uplifted and inspired by the efforts of this organization!

At the end of your walking tour, enjoy some free time for lunch at the center’s cafe (own expense) and then travel by minibus to the nearby Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center.

Cheetah Breeding Project Tour at Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center: (5 hours)
Follow your guide inside the Cheetah Breeding Project and start your tour by watching a video presentation to learn about the breeding program and discover how captive-bred cheetahs are released back to the wild. The center also rehabilitates and treats orphaned or injured cheetahs, and the video serves as a great introduction to the work the center does.

Then, hop inside an open-roof safari vehicle and relax as your guide drives you around various enclosures to see all the animals. More than 80 cheetahs are housed at the center, and you’ll have several opportunities to get up close to some of the tame individuals and curious cubs. Stop for photos and learn all about these magnificent big cats and their life in Kruger National Park from your guide.

Besides the cheetahs, the center is also home to orphaned or injured lions, wild dogs and sable antelopes. Look out for the creatures as you explore, and learn about lesser-known beasts that the site also takes care of, such as the black-footed cat – the smallest of Africa’s wild cats – and ground hornbills with their vibrant red faces.

After exploring the center’s different enclosures, return back to the center and swap your mode of transport back to your minibus. Then, return to your lodge in Mpumalanga, where your Super Saver finishes.
