Jane Goodall Institute South Africa - Chimpanzee Eden Walking Tour

This one-of-a-kind wilderness experience takes you to the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa - Chimpanzee Eden, the only chimpanzee sanctuary in South Africa. Set on a wildlife reserve in the beautiful De Kaap Valley mountains near Johannesburg, this sanctuary brings you up-close-and-personal to refugee and rescued chimpanzees from throughout Central Africa. On your guided walking tour, learn about why these chimps have been displaced and hear about the global efforts of the renowned Jane Goodall Institute as you admire these amazing creatures.

You’ll be picked up from your Mpumalanga hotel in the morning for a drive to the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa, also known as Chimpanzee Eden, a 2,471-acre (1,000-hectare) wildlife sanctuary situated amongst the tranquil bush settings of the Umhloti Nature Reserve in the De Kaap Valley mountains.

When you arrive, your expert guide will take you on an extensive walking tour of this amazing chimpanzee sanctuary, home to refugee and rescued chimpanzees who have been misplaced from their natural habitats in Central Africa due to hunting, trade and entertainment industries. This tranquil sanctuary is committed to the rescue and care of chimpanzees in need of refuge and brings the world of chimpanzees closer to humanity through education and tourism.

As you explore these semi-wild settings, you’ll learn all about our closest human relatives and about the works of renowned primatologist Jane Goodall, who founded the Jane Goodall Institute. Animal lover or not, you’ll be uplifted and inspired by the efforts of this global organization.

Observe chimpanzees climbing trees, interacting, eating and playing. Discover how these chimps are rehabilitated with the help of their care takers, who reintroduce them back into social life through various exercises and exposures. Chimp Eden is the only sanctuary for chimpanzees within South Africa, but it’s also home to other game animals such as giraffes and zebras, which you'll see on your tour.

At the end of your tour, you'll be taken back to your hotel. You'll leave with a whole new appreciation for wildlife rescue and rehabilitation efforts -- and, of course, those adorable chimpanzees!
