I lost my city during the war. This is why I wished to build my own village.… I dream of an open place with cultural diversity which sets up against globalization. (Emir Kusturica, July 2004)
Our first visit will be the Zica Monastery (13th c.), the first seat of the independent Serbian Archbishopric and the church where the majority of Serbian kings were crowned.
Then we will drive through the Valley of the River Ibar and drive up the mountain to reach the Studenica Monastery (12th c.), considered to be the crowning achievement of medieval culture and art in Serbia. After the visit and lunch in Studenica we will continue our journey through GOLIJA BIOSPHERE NATURAL RESERVE to Arilje, the home of the best raspberries in the world. Here we will visit theChurch of St. Achilius (13th c.), which has the famous procession of Serbian medieval kings painted on its walls.
We will stay for dinner and overnight in Kustendorf, also called Drvengrad (Wooden Town), or Mecavnik, a charming village also built by Emir Kusturica after filming his 'Life is a miracle'.
Next day in the morning we will enjoy spectacular views during the ride on Sargan 8 train. From Mokra Gora you will pass through 22 tunnels, cross five bridges, and overcome the altitude difference of 300 meters, and all that on a total distance of 15,440 meters.
Afterwards we will cross the border with Bosnia and Hercegovina to visit Visegrad. In 1961 when Ivo Andric, Serbian writer won a Nobel Prize for literature for his novel The Bridge on the Drina, this small town set in mountains become known all over the world. The bridge was built in 16th century on the route linking the plains of the Danube to Sarajevo and the Adriatic coast, particularly to the free port of Ragusa. Located in a position of geostrategic importance, the bridge bears witness to important cultural exchanges between the Balkans, the Ottoman Empire and the Mediterranean world, between Christianity and Islam, through the long course of history. Today it is on the UNESCO List of World Heritage. After visiting the bridge we will stroll through Andricgrad or Stone Town, which is being built by Emir Kusturica, a famous film director for his next film The Bridge on the Drina. Although it will be completely finished only next year, it has already become an attraction for visitors from all over the world.
On our way back to Belgrade we will travel through the Ovcar Kablar Gorge and visit the Annunciation Monastery, one of the most beautiful Serbian Orthodox monasteries built here in late Middle Ages.
