Our tour begins with a scenic drive through countryside to Eastern Serbia and Gjerdap National Park and Iron Gates Gorge. Our first destination is the Museum of Lepenski Vir, which houses an exhibition of the world famous Mesolithic archaeological site on the banks of the river Danube. Lepenski Vir was the centre of one of the most important prehistoric cultures in Europe where the remains of religious architecture dating from 6,500 to 5,500 BC have been found.
Lepenski Vir was declared a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance and it is protected by the Republic of Serbia.
Based on the shape and proportions of the settlement it can be inferred that the builders of Lepenski Vir had a certain amount of mathematical knowledge. In the centre of each house there was a fireplace, with a sculpture made of round rocks and representing human figures. Initially they were just fishlike human heads, with fish or deer motifs and with some intriguing inscriptions on them: symbols resembling the coordinate system, sketches, letters, numbers and landscapes.
Afterwards, we will continue to Golubac Fortress, which marks the entrance to Djerdap National Park, stands on the cliffs of the Danube at a place where the Danube is almost 6 km wide. Built in the 14th century it has 9 impressive towers. Its position allowing it easy control of river traffic during the Middle Ages was the reason why it was the object of many battles, especially between the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary.
Our last stop is in Smederevo where we will visit a medieval fortified city which was the capital of Serbia in the Middle Ages. The fortified town of Smederevo is located on the right bank of the River Danube on the triangular plain formed by the confluence of the Danube and Jezava rivers. The fortress' position connecting the Balkans and Central Europe has made it an important religious and commercial centre for centuries.
It was declared a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance and it was placed on the Tentative List for possible nomination as a World Heritage Site (UNESCO).
