New Maidens Convent and Cemetery

The history of New Maidens convent begun in 1524 in honor of the return of city Smolensk to Russia and was build by the crown prince Vasily the Third ( father of Ivan the Terrible).The events that brought popularity to the convent are going back to the times of Peter the Great and 3 famous women related to his family who have been locked in the convent to serve the religion until the end of their days.

The convent has survived the occupation of Napoleon army in 1812 and use to be closed by soviet government in 1922 and was used as a «Museum of Woman's Emancipation» until its reopening in 1964. By taking this tour you will also have a chance to visit the most prestigious cemetery of entire country  what was founded in 1898 and visit such graves as Nikolai Yeltsin, Nikita Khrushchev, Anton Chekhov, Dmitri Shostakovitch, famous Soviet poets, army generals and aircraft engineers.
