Monasteries and Caves

The tour starts in Alcobaça, city whose name is said to have derived from the junction the names of the rivers Alcoa and Baça. Here we find the Monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaça, recognized as World Heritage by UNESCO in the year of 1989, and elected as one of the Portuguese national wonders. The Monastery of Alcobaça is the first gothic monument builted in Portugal, and one of the best preserved monuments of Cistercian architecture. In Alcobaça you can taste the delicious Alcobaça Cherry Liqueur, a product produced exclusively by artisanal processes and starting of the best cherries in the west zone.

Then we follow to Batalha, were  we are going to visit the Monastery da Batalha. This monument was recognized as World Heritage of Humanity in 1987 and is considered one of the Portuguese national wonders. Builted  by King  D. João I, as thanks to the Virgin for the victory of the Battle of Aljubarrota, this monument is endowed with various styles of construction, such as the late Gothic and Manueline styles.

In the afternoon we will go up toward Serra dos Candeeiros, where is located the largest caves in Portugal -Grutas de Mira D\'aire, known as the Cathedral of the Portuguese Underworld, with over 11km of known length and 110mt. There, we will visit the 600 meters that are open to the public. These Caves are one of the seven wonders of Portugal. Inaugurated in 1974, its size, beauty and ecological importance of groundwater, associated with a depression led to flooding that were classified as a monument of Public Interest in 1955.
