The soundtrack to any visit to Lisbon has to be fado, the music genre that is a window on the Portuguese soul. This night-time excursion allows you to soak up the atmosphere of the city before capping it off with dinner at a restaurant while being entertained by fado singers.
We begin the evening with a panoramic tour of some of the most important places and monuments in both the monumental suburb of Belem and in central Lisbon.
In Belem you will see the magnificent Tower of Belem, a 16th century defensive structure built in the native Manueline variant of Gothic architecture. It has survived many a battle and is now a Unesco World Heritage site. Under the night floodlights, its golden reflection sparkles in the Tagus.
From there we will head to the city centre to drive through emblematic spots such as Comercio, Rossio and Pombal squares, and the Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon’s most elegant boulevard.
Soon it will be time for the highlight of the night: a traditional dinner to the accompaniment of fado. These nostalgic and wistful songs are considered to be the ultimate expression of the spirit of Portugal: beauty tinged with melancholy.
The word fado itself means destiny and is derived from the Latin word that gave English the word fate. It is almost as if the songs are saying that a genuine fado experience is your destiny when in town.
