This is the only such place in the world, where one can both sail and ride a boat. The system of inclined planes and locks - built in the 19th century by Gearg Jacob Steenke, allows us to perform a trip which gives unforgettable memories. The total height of the 5 inclined planes is more than 90 meters.
A few years ago, the Canal was listed by UNESCO as a memorial to world culture inheritances. In the past it was called Oberland Canal, as it flows through the remarkable part of today's Poland. It has an exceptionally rich history. It was not far from here that the Goths: the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths established a dwelling centre... It is still hard to believe that from here they wandered off to siege the power of Rome.
Elblag Canal - situated some 90 kilometers from Gdansk - so it takes ca. 1,5 hrs drive (the duration of the drive might vary - depending on the traffic conditions).
Please note: Elbląg Canal is closed for winter break - from mid-September till May.
The sail-ride on the boat takes about 2 hrs and includes 4 inclined planes. This is the most interesting part of the journey.
After the boat trip, the car takes the tourists back to Gdańsk - with a stop in Elbląg - a town situated about 45 minutes from the Canal. It is worth stopping there as the town - after the complete devastation by the Soviet army in 1945 and the Polish authorities after the war (all the brick was taken away)- is now being splendidly recontructed. The modern way of building the historical city does not take away its charm. There one can see a church tower - which is nearly the exact height as the height of the inclined planes...
