The tour starts with a visit to the vantage point at Carmen Alto, overlooking the River Chili (the city's main river), which gives a panoramic view of the city. This is followed by a visit to Yanahuara, a traditional Arequipa neighbourhood, with myriad cobbled streets and one of the best examples of Cuzco mestizo religious architecture, built in 1750. Then to the Main Square, one of Peru's most attractive, because of its use of sillar, its carved arcades and the neighbouring cathedral, originally built in the 17th Century and rebuilt completely several times after earthquakes. From there to the church of the Society of Jesus (1590), a classic example of local Baroque architecture, which contains an exceptional collection of paintings and murals.
