Shimshal, Gojal’s oldest Wakhi-speaking village, mountains many traditional customs, Shimshal’s 2000 residents have Gojal’s largest livestock herds and grazing rights to nearly 5000 sq km of territory, including the only part of Pakistan in Central Asia. The rolling grassland of Shimshal Pamir, on the watershed divide between South Asia and central Asia, are their primary summer pastures. Ghuzhera and Lupgar are their main pastures.
Shimshal was closed to outsiders until 1986. Since then, increasing number of foreigners make the trek each year. Beyond the village lies Gojal’s best trekking. When you go to shimshal and beyond, you travel with shimshalis. These amazing men carry heavy load all day long over trails that leave most trekkers exhausted. They also the choice as high altitude porters on most mountaineering expeditions.
Shimshal’s vast area is home to snow leopards, brown bears and sizable herds of blue sheep and ibex. Although these mammals usually stay at inaccessible heights, shimshal offer some of the northern pakistan’s best wildlife-watching opportunities. Shimshal has banned hunting, although display of ibex horns along the trails testify to its previous popularity.
