Description:
Each year more children find themselves on the streets of Kathmandu, Nepal's capital, without basic human needs. There are different circumstances that can lead to a child being left without food, clothes, education, and a warm place to sleep. Although many of these children find their way into shelters or orphanages, there is little funding which leaves them understaffed and in great need of volunteer assistance.
MICATZ allows the opportunity to work with underprivileged children who have been isolated and, many times, forgotten by society at large. Although working with orphans can be physically and emotionally hard work, our volunteers find it all the more rewarding. Our volunteers involve themselves in daily activities that help the facilities run smoothly, and show the children that someone does care about them. Generally, our volunteers teach three classes per day, thus allowing direct interaction with the children, and a chance to touch a child's life and to help them create a better future.
Working with MICATZ to assist in an orphanage creates an opportunity to exchange knowledge and develop ideas that allows us to work toward a better future. Volunteers provide these children with something many locals cannot; they share their perspective of the world, and by doing so create excitement and a desire to learn more. Our volunteers make learning interesting, exciting, and joyful. Above all else, a volunteer can show an orphaned child what it is like to be loved and appreciated.
Volunteer’s responsibilities:
International volunteers may be responsible for the following:
o Teaching English, math, computers or other important subjects at an orphanage or school ( about 3-4 hours a day)
o Monitor academic progress of children by helping out with their homework and ensuring it gets completed
o Organize games, dancing, singing, drawing, and other creative education and various learning activities
o Help during excursions and field-trips
o Help with nutrition (may involve work in the kitchen and even garden)
o Skill training for older children
o Sanitation and personal hygiene
o Administration
o Any other ideas the volunteer may have
The success of your volunteer experience is entirely dependent upon you and what you want out of it. A proactive attitude and a willingness to help are essential in making the most of your time spent as a volunteer in Nepal.
Orientation:Volunteers are welcomed by a MICATZ representative at the airport in Kathmandu, before being guided to their new home. After arrival and getting acquainted with the area, volunteers then have personal meetings with the representative to determine how to best utilize the volunteer's skills, time and experience.
Project Start Dates:
Help is needed year-round. Volunteers determine their own start dates.
Accommodations:
Volunteers will typically live with a host family that is involved with MICATZ. Two or three meals per day will be provided to you by your host family, depending on the individual situation. Assistance will be provided to help ensure safe and reliable transportation to, from, and within Nepal.
Project Duration and Cost:
The maximum length of stay in Nepal is currently 5 months on a traveler’s visa, in accordance with the government. Although the duration of a volunteer’s stay is entirely up to the individual, and always appreciated, a longer stay is certainly more valuable and useful to the students. Volunteer fees vary, based on the length of stay and placement with MICATZ. And remember that it is much less costly to visit once for a longer stay, than to make multiple short trips. Please contact a representative of MICATZ for more details.
