Limi Valley Trek

This trek takes you to the remote far western corner of Nepal. If you want to get off the beaten track in a culturally rich region and into some amazing mountain scenery this is a great choice if you can manage the logistics of it. The trek itself passes crosses two high passes; Nara La (4580m) and Nyalu La (4990m), but the highlight of the journey might be the ancient fortified villages of Janh, Halji and Til. The trek starts in Simikot which requires a flight from Kathmandu and then onward to Nepalganj and Simikot. Expect frequent flight delays and build in a few extra days into your plans. The best season is from May to October and its likely impossible due to snow blocked passes during other times of the year. It’s a self supported camping style trek that requires a restricted permit and representation by a local guide. There are frequent supply shortages in Simikot so make sure to bring your own treats and don’t expect much along the trail (this is really off the beaten track).

Day 1

Depart Kathmandu to Nepalganj by flight. Spend the night in the largest city in western Nepal and get a taste of its rugged frontier character.

Day 2

Depart from Nepalganj to Simikot by air and spend the night in Simikot preparing for the start of the trek.

Day 3

Trekking from Simikot to Dharapuri. It’s a 300m acent and then an 800m decent to the canyon bottom and Dharapuri. Great camping spots and some swimming holes await.

Day 4

Trekking from Dharapuri to Kermi. Some steep stretches of trail. Ask the locals about some hot springs about a 40 min walk above Kermi.

Day 5

Trekking from Kermi to Chuma Khola Valley. Some steep climbs and then a more gradual grade through some beautiful pine forests.

Day 6

Trekking from Chuma Khola Valley to Dharamsala. Gaining elevation the pine forests give way to Rhododendron trees while the valley is flanked by sheer cliffs. Camping is near 4000m near the Nyalu Lagna Base Camp.

Day 7

Trekking from Dharamsala to Talung Camp. It’s a long grind up to the Nyalu Lagna pass (4990m) and most parties get a start as early as 5am to make the 1000m climb. On a clear day its possible to see as far as Mount Kailash and the Tibetan Plateau.

Day 8

Trekking from Talung Camp to Jang. Follow the glacially carved Talung valley and then climb over to the Takche Valley. Pass the now deserted village of Gumma Yok.

Day 9

Rest day in Jang. Stop in Jang a small village with an impressive set of stone houses that is worth exploring and a good place for a rest day.

Day 10

Trekking from Jang to Halji. Its a short 3 hour trek to Halji leaving enough time to visit Rinzin Ling Gompa which is one of the most important in the Limi region.

Day 11

Trekking from Halji to Til. It’s a 10km trek to Tilt the last village in the Limi Valley.

Day 12

Trekking from Til to Manepene. It’s a short distance but a lot of down through some dramatic mountain scenery to reach the valley of Humla Karnali Valley.

Day 13

Trekking from Manepene to Hilsa. Hilsa servers the regional border trade and some items for sale are available in the small shops.

Day 14

Trekking from Hilsa to Palbang. Today takes you on a steep climb over the Nara La (4580m) pass. The word La is Pass in Nepal.

Day 15

Trekking from Palbang to Muchu. A relatively easy downhill day that ends at the Humla Karnali River.

Day 16

Trekking from Muchu to Chumsa Khola. One of the most beautiful days on the trek as you follow the scenic milky blue water of the Humla Karnali River.

Day 17

Trekking from Chumsa Khola to Dharapuri. Same as above but in reverse.

Day 18

Trekking from Dharapuri to Simikot. Same as above but in reverse.

Day 19

Fly from Simikot to Nepalganj.

Day 20

Fly from Nepalganj back to Kathmandu.
