East of the ruins of Chichen Itza, Ek-Balam is a recently restored archaeological site and one of the Yucutan's most stunning and popular attractions. Roam the various defensive walls that snake through the city, and peek into the rooms of the Acropolis to find one-of-a-kind ancient paintings and murals.

Gasp as you brave the depths of the mysterious, cavernous Cenote Maya, the most impressive of these underground caves. The Maya cenotes are a system of underground sinkholes that have occurred due to the erosion of limestone bedrock and exposure of groundwater beneath. Descend into this colossal subterranean chamber to observe beautiful natural formations and a large natural pool of 80 metres in diametre. Eerie, elongated stalactites stretch from the cave ceiling, stopping inches above the surface of the glowing blue-green pool like reaching fingers. Beams of light filter through from above, illuminating the water's surface.
